Have you ever found yourself at the Copa Airlines counter staring at the agent with a concerned look on their face as they refer to your overweight bag? Not the best way to start your much-anticipated tropical escape.
I've been in that position too—a nervous, sweaty mess while I scrambled to move things between suitcases. But let me tell you, you can avoid this uncomfortable situation (and nasty fees that hurt much more than a sunburn) by understanding Copa Airlines baggage policy before you pack.
In the next few moments, you will know the specifics on Copa's weight limits, size restrictions, and those pesky extra fees that they don't tell you about.
What many travelers don't realize is that Copa's policies depend on where your flight is to. And that little detail? Could end up costing you hundreds.
If you book your trip on Copa Airlines, you'll want to understand what they allow you to carry as you carry on to the plane. All passengers (adult, child, and infant) can carry their own carry-on item and 1 personal item (e.g., purse, laptop, small backpack, etc.).
For your carry-on item, the limits state it can be NO bigger than
22 x 14 x 9 inches (56 x 36 x 23 cm)
Maximum weight: 22 lbs (10 kg)
All personal items must fit under the seat in front of you and can be NO larger than 17 x 13 x 6 inches (43 x 33 x 15). Before you can even say "baggage fee," it is critical to remember this, because bag size is a common issue when carrying on baggage. If your bags are over these limits, your carry-on baggage will be checked at the gate, and you may pay a baggage fee.
2. Items Allowed in Carry-On
So what's going on the plane? Here's a list of things allowed by Copa:
• Toiletries (3.4 oz / 100ml containers in a clear quart-size container).
• Medication (take medications/ prescriptions if applicable).
• Electronics (phones, tablets, computers).
• Cameras and camera equipment.
• Travel documents.
• Snacks - (anything non-liquid)
• Books, magazines
• Change of clothes.
• One small musical instrument (only if space allows).
3. Special Items
There are some items that will require special assistance:
• Baby supplies: Baby food, infant formula, and/or breast milk are not included in the definition of liquid.
• Medical equipment: CPAPs, portable oxygen concentrator, etc. These will need to be documented.
• Mobility devices: Mobility devices such as a cane, walker, or collapsible wheelchair, all require special consideration.
• Lithium batteries: Batteries must either be in a device or packed in a case to protect the batteries from shorting.
• Duty-free liquids: Duty-free liquids must be in tamper evident bags and have receipts.
4. Strategies for Packing Smart
Packing smart can make the difference:
Use packing cubes to compress clothes and keep you organized.
When you can, wear your heaviest clothing (boots, jacket) on the plane.
Roll clothes instead of folding them - it frees up space.
Keeping your personal items at the top of your bag makes it easier to dig in at security.
Take a photo of your bag and its contents before you travel (also helps with claims).
Use a soft-sided bag—if you are going to overstuff a bag it is a lot more forgiving when you try and fit it in the overhead bins.
Carry a mini-emergency kit with your medications and overnight kit (full list will be provided in later stages).
Carry an empty water bottle and fill it after you pass through security.
Copa Airlines taken aboard? Depending on what class of ticket you have, luggage is allowed to a certain amount, for free. Here is how it works:
Economy Class - 1 checked bag 50 lbs (23 kg)
Premium Economy - 2 checked bags 50 lbs each
Business Class, (Copa Business) - 2 checked bags and up to, 70 lbs (32 kg) each
ConnectMiles PreferMember Platinum/Gold - No checked baggage charges, with additional bag(s) allowed in accordance with card membership.
Copa is much more accommodating compared with other airlines that charge you for everything. In fact, Copa will even allow you to check your first bag for free on most route, which nowadays is like a dying breed.
Copa is serious about their weight limits. There is a hefty fee if you exceed them:
Standard Limit: 50 pounds (23 kg) per bag for Economy/Premium Economy.
Business Class Limit: 70 pounds (32 kg) per bag.
Maximum Weight: No bag can exceed 100 lbs (45 kg) regardless of class.
The airline staff weighs every bag at the time of check-in, so don't think you can pull a fast one by carrying an extra pair of shoes.
Packed your entire wardrobe? Be ready to pay:
|
Issue |
Fee (varies by route) |
|
Overweight (51-70 lbs) |
$100-$175 |
|
Overweight (71-100 lbs) |
$200-$300 |
|
Oversized (63-115 linear inches) |
$100-$200 |
Copa's baggage tracking is not stuck in the 90s.
You even get to watch your suitcase take the same trip you do (hopefully not going a different way).
If Copa loses your bag (and it can happen), please:
If you take your favorite sports equipment when you travel, you are in luck with Copa Airlines. They recognize that some vacation plans include skiing/snowboarding or surfing.
Golf equipment can be checked as regular checked bags, effectively adding one item/item allowance to your checked bags. Just remember when packing your golf bag, it cannot be more than 70 pounds... not that anyone truly needs that many golf clubs.
Surfboards up to 9 feet may be checked, but they must be properly packed. There is $150 fee for each direction for a checked surfboard, but that's a small price to pay for catching that perfect wave.
You may also check skis or snowboards. One ski set (with poles) or one snowboard counts as one checked piece.
As long as your fishing equipment is properly packed, you may take it. Just ensure those sharp hooks are not a danger to fellow passengers or crew while flying at 30,000 feet.
Musicians, Copa has not forgotten about you. Small instruments, including violins or small wind instruments, may accompany you in the cabin if they are able to fit underneath the seat or in the overhead bin.
Larger instrument? Cellos and guitars can travel in their own seat (you must get a full-fare ticket) if size restrictions are met. Your beloved Gibson will not have to suffer in the cargo hold.
For even larger instruments that must be checked, Copa is requesting a hard case with good padding. These instruments will count as part of your baggage allowance, so be prepared.
Copa considers your health needs to be more important than anything else. Any necessary medical equipment does not count as baggage if it is documented correctly.
CPAP machines, portable oxygen concentrators and mobility devices can all be carried onto the plane at no extra cost if you bring your prescription or doctor's note.
Additionally, wheelchair users can check their wheelchair for free, as Copa will provide airport wheelchairs for use throughout your journey.
Medication should be kept within your carry-on luggage with proper documentation, and this particularly applies for any liquid medication over the normal restrictions.
Do you want Fluffy or Fido to join in your travels? Copa accepts small pets in-cabin for $150 each way. The pet should fit in an approved carrier that fits in under the seat.
The total weight of the carrier and your pet cannot exceed 20 pounds. If your furry friend weighs over 20 pounds, your furry friend must travel as checked baggage.
Copa requires health certificates for pets issued within 10 days of travel. You will also need the vaccination documentation, so make a veterinary visit before making a booking.
Not every destination will accept pets due to local regulations, so always check the requirements for your destination.
Service animals are treated differently and can travel in-cabin without a carrier but they will have documentation requirements.
Flying Copa Airlines? You must know what these baggage fees will cost you. Their standard baggage fees vary slightly depending on destination and ticket type.
For domestic flights, you can expect to pay:
• 1st checked bag: $30
• 2nd checked bag: $40
• Additional bags: $85 each
For international flights, you can expect to pay:
• 1st checked bag: $45
• 2nd checked bag: $65
• Additional bags: $100 each
There is usually a weight limit of 50 pounds (23 kg) for each bag you check. Go over that? You could be exposed to $100 - $150 extra per overweight bag.
If you have bags larger than 62 linear inches, that will cost you an additional $150.
Copa's baggage fees aren't static. For example, there are often fee increases during holiday seasons (e.g., Christmas, summer vacation) of about 10-20%.
On routes to tourism hot spots like Cancun or Punta Cana, you can often expect increased fees for luggage, while routes with more business travelers may have looser allowances.
Also, be careful if you are flying to South America—you may count on a free first bag, but just know if you are heading to the Caribbean, there are stricter weight limits.

Have you ever waited in a long line at the airport just to check your bags? Copa Airlines offers an online check-in option. Online check-in allows guests to skip the lines at the counter, by checking in up to 24 hours before the flight. The best part? You are not just getting your boarding pass - you can also pre-register the details of the luggage in your checked bag, which means you can get through the bag drop efficiently.
And you'll receive a digital receipt for your registered bags, which means you have some peace of mind if something goes wrong, as you will have proof of registration. You really can't put a price on that Oh did I mention the time savings? You're looking at a save of 30+ minutes in some cases. That's 30+ minutes for some coffee or that last minute duty-free shopping you always amuse yourself with.
We all understand waiting for bags can be like watching paint dry. Luckily, Copa has some very special options for their ConnectMiles Platinum and PreferMember guests: preferred baggage processing! Your bags will receive special tagging that alerts the baggage crew to "handle me first," which means they will be among the first bags to be delivered on the baggage carousel.
Preferred baggage processing is available for purchase for approximately $15-25 (depending on your route). Very much worth it if you're in a rush-- or there is a connecting flight.
Baggage Drop-off Locations:
Copa has made baggage drop-off almost painless since they have dedicated baggage counters at many airports. Copa has even started creating dedicated express lanes in Panama, so you can easily drop-off your belongings for check-in in under 5 minutes (even faster if you use a kiosk)
Many airports are now providing self-service kiosks to print your bag tags. This allows you to tag your bag, drop it off in the designated location, and head to security.
Copa also has several partners in destination cities that allow check-in at certain hotels, and baggage drop-off is now available. You drop your bags off in the morning, enjoy your day, and check your bags arriving at your final destination. What a great way to travel.
International V/S Domestic Flights Differences
1.Customs Considerations
Flights Differences A. Customs Issues Flying with Copa Airlines means different customs requirements depending on if you are hopping the border or staying domestic.
If you are crossing borders, you must go through customs and immigration at your final destination which means you might have your bags checked twice (once at security and once at customs). Pack smart! Keep anything you need to declare (food, money over the limit) easily accessible and ready if necessary.
On domestic flights, you do not have to deal with any of this, no customs forms, no declaration lines, and no stamps in your passport, your bags go straight from the check-in counter to the destination baggage claim.
2.Prohibited Items by Destination

3.Documentation Requirements
International flights require much more paperwork than domestic flights - it's just the way it is.
You're going to need:
• A valid passport (make sure it's not going to expire in the next 6 months)
• You may need a visa to your destination.
• You may need to fill out a customs declaration form.
• You may need to show return or onward tickets (most countries want proof that you are leaving).
Domestic flights are a lot simpler - usually only your government-issued ID and boarding passes are required; however, if you are flying domestically within a country's borders that are not your own, always take your passport too.
Last little tip Smart travelers take pictures of all their travel documents and email them to themselves. I can't tell you how many vacations this has saved.
