To get the most from your baggage allowance, pack light, wear heavier items, and use compression bags. Always check your airline’s limits and consider cabin bags for extra space without extra fees.

Did you ever forfeit a holiday before it even started? This is what happens to thousands of travelers, and it is always associated with their luggage being rejected at the Emirates check-in counter, usually because travelers had no clue what the baggage policy was. I have seen grown adults almost cry at Dubai International.
So, what differentiates a smooth journey and airport chaos? Often, it comes down to understanding Emirates airline's baggage policy before you add another pair of shoes.
I will take you through everything: weight limits, cabin restrictions, confusing unknown fees, and special sporting equipment rules that could save you hundreds of dollars.
But first, let me explain what just happened to the family in front of me last week who turned their first-class journey into a first-class financial mess over a 3 kg mistake...
Are you flying with Emirates? The cabin baggage allowances are determined by the class of travel.
If you travel in Economy Class, you are allowed one piece of cabin baggage to weigh up to 7 kg/15 lbs. The maximum dimensions cannot be larger than 55 x 38 x 20 cm (22 x 15 x 8 inches); anything larger must be checked.
In Business Class and First Class, you are allowed two pieces of cabin baggage. Each of these pieces can either be a handbag or briefcase plus a garment bag. In Business Class and First Class, you are allowed up to 14 kg/30lbs each. It is up to you if you have a little, a lot, or a lot, a lot more carry-on baggage in Business Class or First Class. The weight and size allowance is the same for economy, business, and first class.
So, don't push it, as these tickets are expensive; let the airline gate agents enforce their limits, and when flights are full, it's easy to do. If you have oversize or overweight baggage, expect that it will be transferred to the hold for the entire duration of your flight and only be available upon arrival at your destination when you pick it up at baggage claim.
What are you really able to pack in your carry-on? Here is a little summary:
• Personal items such as wallets, keys, & travel documents.
• Medications (with paperwork for liquids).
• Toiletries of 100 ml or less, all in one clear resealable plastic bag.
• Small laptop or tablet.
• Cameras and similar small electronics.
• Books, magazines, or reading materials.
• A change of clothes (always a good idea for long-haul flights).
• Small snacks (although Emirates generally feeds you very well).
• If traveling with an infant, you can even take baby items.
Electronics can be great things to travel with, but there are some rules to consider.
Emirates permits most standard electronic devices to be taken as cabin baggage, including
• Smartphones and Mobile Phones.
• Laptops and Tablets.
• E-Readers.
• Cameras and Video Equipment.
• Headphones and EarPods.
• Power banks and portable chargers.
Do not forget that power banks and spare lithium batteries must go in cabin baggage and not checked baggage for safety reasons. The power banks should not exceed a capacity of 100 Wh (watt-hours). If they are in the range of 100-160 Wh, you require the approval of the airline.
Other than that, larger electronic devices need to be put away during takeoff and landing. Please charge all your electronics before boarding, as security may ask you to turn them on.
There are certain items that you cannot take with you, whether it is in the cabin or at all. Here is what to leave off your list:
Items that are totally banned:
Permissible items only in checked baggage:
• Scissors and knives (sharp objects).
• Tools over 15 cm long.
• Sports equipment such as baseball bats and golf clubs.
• Certain lighters and matches.
Restricted liquids:
• Alcoholic beverages (must be sealed if purchased as duty-free item)
• More than allowable amounts of medications (requires documentation)
Because security regulations change regularly, it's valuable to check Emirates' website before you travel. This is even more advisable when taking anything out of the ordinary or if uncertain about an item.
When in doubt, leave it out or pack it in your allowed checked luggage and avoid aggravation at security.
Is preparing for a flight on Emirates? The weight that you can take with you is dependent on your cabin class. In general, the allowances that most Economy Class passengers will receive is 30kg (66lbs). This will increase to 35kg (77lbs) for travel in or out of the Americas.
Economy Class on Emirates also allows 40kg (88lbs) for Business Class and 50kg (110lbs) for First Class, giving you enough allowance for more new clothes and souvenirs.
What many people do not understand, is that Emirates utilizes weight, not pieces, for most routes. Emirates uses a piece concept for increased allowances, however, for travel to and from the Americas, Canada and Brazil, Emirates changes to a piece concept:
|
Cabin Class |
Pieces Allowed |
Max Weight Per Piece |
|
Economy |
2 pieces |
23kg (50lbs) each |
|
Business |
2 pieces |
32kg (70lbs) each |
|
First |
2 pieces |
32kg (70lbs) each |
Your Skyward membership tier can really determine your baggage allowance. Blue members receive their regular allowance, but Silver members get a complimentary 12kg (26 lbs) on a weight-based route or one more piece on piece-concept routes.
Gold members will receive an additional 16kg (35 lbs) or a piece of baggage on the same basis. And if you're a Platinum member, congratulations! You will receive a generous additional 20kg (44 lbs) or one piece.
The best part? These additional allowances apply even when flying Economy. For frequent travelers, the status that Skywards gives you is extremely advantageous.
If you need more room, Emirates will give you pre-purchase option with which you'll save approximately 20% compared to airport prices.
You can purchase extra weight in 5kg increments, up to 25kg over your allowance. Airport prices vary by route, you can expect to pay $65-150 for each 5kg increment by purchasing online in advance.
If you're traveling piece-concept, you can add on an additional piece (23kg max) for around $200 if booked in advance.
Pro-tip: you must add extra baggage at least 4 hours before departure via the Emirates website or app. The sooner the better to have a chance at those discounted prices.
Some articles may be called oversized in Emirates if their combined length, width, and height are greater than 300 cm. Excess luggage fees are a flat charge of between $175-350, based on the route.
Weight also matters. If your baggage is in excess of the normal fare but weighs less than 32 kg, you will pay some excess weight charges. Baggage over 32 kg won't be accepted as checked baggage and will have to use cargo services instead.
Special treatment applies to sports equipment. Standard allowances generally apply to golf bags, ski equipment, and diving gear although oversize charges may apply.
For island hopping or multi-destination escapades, your baggage allowance will be drawn from the most generous cabin class and route-specific combination on your ticket.
If your journey is booked on separately ticketed reservations, you will be governed by each flight segment individually. This means you may need to collect your baggage and recheck it during your intermediate stops, including applicable excess fees.
When booking your multi-city itineraries, remember that Emirates' interline agreements with partner airlines may apply. Even if Emirates allowanced applies to all segments of your journey, partner operated segments may require different baggage allowances.
The opera not to miss? Look before you pack! Confirm the allowance for each leg of your journey before you fill your suitcase. This one action will help you avoid surprises and fees at the check-in counter.
Flying with special luggage on Emirates is easy and simple. Whether you're taking special sports equipment, musical instruments, or medical equipment Emirates will get you safely and securely. Most of it goes as checked baggage (free of charge), a few items go as odd sized/delicate equipment and require special handling. We recommend you let the airline know about it, see if there are size and weight limits, and tell Emirates. Emirates staff are there to help, ensuring your special luggage is delivered timely and safe.
Going on a trip with sports equipment? Make sure it is in a good and padded case if needed. You should label everything and check the airline rules ahead of time. You may need special handling of anything oversized or heavy. Make sure you arrive early enough to allow time for check-in and inspection of your equipment.
Planning to fly with your musical instrument? Most airlines allow small instruments as carry-on if they fit in the overhead bin. Larger ones may need special handling or a separate seat. Always use a hard case, label it well, and check your airline’s specific policy before heading to the airport.
Traveling with medical equipment? Most airlines will allow you to travel free with essential medical devices such as oxygen tanks or CPAP machines, but you often have to give them advanced notice. Be sure to pack everything securely and carry the proper prescriptions or documentation. It is always a good idea to contact your airline in advance to learn about their specific medical equipment policies and available resources.
Traveling with a pet? Check if your airline allows travel in-cabin or as cargo. Make sure you have a carrier that is comfortable and approved by the airline being used as well as appropriate records of vaccinations. Book early (because there is limited space for animals in airline travel) and always verify specific pet travel guidelines with the airline.
