EVA airline Baggage Policy:

Have you ever found yourself standing at the check-in counter, pulse racing, and mentally trying to work out if your suitcase is overweight? If your upcoming flight is with EVA Air then worry no more.

I've spent countless hours poring over EVA Air's baggage policy information so you don't have to waste valuable time and energy figuring out the airline mumbo-jumbo.

Whether you have a short trip to Taipei for business or you're about to embark on a month-long trip around Asia, understanding EVA Air's baggage allowances will save you from unexpected fees at the airport.

But here is the most overlooked aspect of EVA Air's policy that can potentially save you money (or, create space in your bag)...

Carry-On Baggage Allowances:

Size and Weight Restrictions:

Have you ever attempted to cram an oversized bag into those small overhead bins? Not fun. EVA Air makes carry-ons easy; for most passengers, you are allowed to carry 1 piece of cabin luggage up to 22 x 14 x 9 inches (56 x 36 x 23 cm) and, of course, 15 lbs (7 kg).

This actually is quite generous as some airlines limit you to only 10 lbs. Just keep in mind that if your bag does not fit in the sizer at check-in, you will be checking it (and possibly paying to do so).

Items Permitted in Cabin Luggage:-

What can you actually pack in that carry-on? The usual suspects are allowed: clothing, electronics, medications, and a reasonable amount of toiletries (if it meets the 3-1-1 liquid rule, of course).

EVA Air also allows the following items to be brought on:

  • A small personal item, such as a purse, laptop bag, or camera bag
  • Food items for the flight (but not things that will stink up your fellow passengers - they will thank you)
  • Travel documents and valuables
  • Medical equipment that has documentation

Please, leave the Swiss Army knife, full sized shampoo bottles, and hover board at home. You will thank me later.

Special Handling for Valuables:-

Have expensive camera gear? Jewelry for that special occasion? Laptops and electronics? Keep it all with you. EVA Air actually recommends keeping these items in your carry-on:

  • Cash, jewelry, and important documents
  • Prescription medications (in the labeled container)
  • Electronics and fragile items
  • Business documents
  • Missing things that can't be easily replaced

They aren't just being paranoid. Sometimes baggage handling systems can be rough, and checked bags sometimes take an unscheduled side trip.

Class-Specific Allowances:-

Flying Royal Laurel or Premium Laurel? Good news! You're allowed two carry-on pieces instead of one, both up to 15 pounds.

Here's the breakdown by class:

For those traveling in economy, don't be too upset—your one bag plus personal item is more than enough for most trips. Just pack smartly.

Checked Baggage Rules:

A. Free Allowance by Fare Class:

Traveling with EVA? Your baggage limit depends on your fare type and it gets even better:
Royal Laurel/Premium Laurel Class:
• 2 pieces, max 32kg (70lbs) each.
Business Class:
• 2 pieces, max. 32kg (70lbs) each.
Premium Economy Class:
• 2 pieces, max. 23kg (50lbs) each.
Economy Class:
• 2 pieces, max. 23kg (50lbs) each for most routes.
• 1 piece for some regional Asia routes.
Star Alliance Gold members and EVA Air Infinity MileageLands Diamond/Gold members are allowed an additional piece of checked baggage regardless of your fare type which is a great deal.

B. Weight Restrictions and Extra Fees:

If you are over the luggage limits, you better be prepared to pay.

  • Extra type Fee (route dependent)
  • Overweight (23-32kg) $100-150 per piece
  • Severely overweight (32-45kg) $200-300 per piece
  • Extra piece $175-300 per piece
  • The fees go up for long haul services to North America and Europe, but it ultimately depends on your route.

C. Size Restrictions:

EVA Air has size limits on their baggage.

  • Maximum dimensions per piece: 158 cm per piece (62 inches and maximum

length + width + height)

  • Bigger than that? Then it is oversized and you will pay more.

  • Oddly shaped luggage may also get billed for special handling fees.

D. Restricted Items:

Never even think about taking:

  • Flammable items (lighter, matches)
  • Explosives or firework
  • Toxic items
  • Compressed gas
  • Strong magnets
  • Any liquid greater than 100ml in a carry-on

The airline follows the International Air Transport Association Dangerous Goods Regulations. If you do not follow these codes of conduct, you can be fined, or worse, you can be prosecuted.

 E. Special Items Handling:

If you have something less than ordinary, this is the policy on them:
Sports equipment:
• Golf bags: one piece of checked luggage.
• Bicycles require special packaging, and there will be additional fees.
Musical instruments:
• Smaller instruments can be overhead carry-ons if they fit.
• Larger instruments for pay for an additional seat.
Fragile items:
• They must be packaged appropriately.
• You can use "Fragile" stickers but EVA Air does not guarantee it will be handled in a special way.
Medical equipment:
• Assistive devices do not count against your allowance.
• You must let EVA Air know 48 hours prior to departure.
It is better to pre-register special items when booking to avoid surprises at the airport.

Special Baggage Considerations:

Sports Equipment Policies:
Have golf clubs, skis or scuba gear? EVA Air is fine with that! Your sports equipment will count against your checked baggage, subject to terms, but they have some rules to be aware of.

Golf bags can't weigh more than 23kg (50lbs) and to fish you need to transport rods in a protected case. For the skiers, one set of ski equipment (skis/snowboard, boots, and poles) is included in your checked baggage allowance.

Bikes are a little more difficult: must be packed in a hard-case, handlebars turned sideways, pedals removed, tires deflated, and oversize fees apply in many cases.

As for surfers, your surfboards need to be in a padded bag and overall dimensions can't exceed 277cm (109in).

Traveling With Musical Instruments:
Attention musicians! EVA Air gets it: your instrument is not just luggage, it's practically family.

If your instrument is small enough (violin, guitar), EVA Air will allow you to carry it aboard if it fits in the overhead. Just know you will need to have a hard case.

If you have a larger instrument like a cello, you will need to purchase it its own seat. Yes, you read that right. You will book a seat for your cello (as 'CELLO') and it will have its own boarding pass.

If you have an extra large instrument like a double bass or harp, it will need to be checked in with your cargo. Make sure your instrument is in an approved case with proper padding for air travel including a pillow or foam padding.

Medical Equipment Guidelines: -
Traveling with medical equipment doesn't have to be stressful. Most essential medical equipment are not counted in your baggage limit - that's a huge relief.

CPAP machines and portable oxygen concentrators can be taken on board at no charge but must comply with EVA safety requirements. A doctor's statement, dated no more than 10 days from the date of your flight, must be provided.

If you require a wheelchair, you can check your own wheelchair free of charge. EVA will accept both manual and battery-powered wheelchairs. But, must have a 48 hour notice for battery-powered wheelchairs.

You should take your medication in your carry-on in the original prescription bottle. If you have liquid medications greater than the normal (i.e. 100mL), don't worry - just tell security.

Baggage Services and Fees:

Excess Baggage Charges:-
Ever packed your suitcase only to find out it's way over the weight limit? Yep, it happens to the best of us! You will pay for the extra weight with EVA Air, but at least you know exactly how much you will pay.

Excess baggage fees per piece for international flights range from $50-100 per extra piece depending on your route. If your bag is overweight (23-32kg) it should also be $70-150. If you have those gigantic bags over 32kg, you can expect to pay $150-200.

All economy class passengers should receive a 23kg allowance per bag where business class travelers receive 32kg. They will charge excess fees for any overweight baggage.

I recommend weighing your luggage before you arrive at the airport. A luggage scale is worth $20 because you could potentially pay $100 at check-in.

Options for Additional Baggage Pre-Purchase:
Smart travelers know this little secret: pre-buying your baggage allowance saves you a ton of money! EVA Air gives you discounts of nearly 20% when you pre-purchase baggage through the website or the mobile app.

Pre-purchasing is super simple. Log into your booking, click on "Manage My Booking", and add the extra baggage allowance you need. Make sure you pre-purchase your allowance according to your flight's baggage policy for at least 24 hours before your departure to save on the airfare.

The price difference is no joke:

Europe to Asia

Baggage Insurance Options:
Lost bags can ruin your trip quicker than bad weather! EVA Air provides basic coverage (generally $20 a kg) but let's be serious, that is not covering your designer clothing or your tech gear.

To properly protect yourself, EVA partners with a few insurance companies that provide coverage for lost or damaged items up to $5,000. Insurance premiums generally run $15-25 per trip, depending on your declared value.

Some credit cards provide baggage insurance if you book your flight using that credit card. Check your card benefits before paying for insurance.

Always keep your receipts of expensive items and take pictures of your luggage contents before travelling. It is much smoother to submit an insurance claim when you have proof.

Priority Handling Services:
Do you dread waiting at baggage claim? With EVA Air's priority handling service, your bags will be among the first to appear on the carousel.

This premium service ranges from $15-30, depending on your route, and is only available for purchase with your ticket or during check-in. Besides going first, your luggage will receive a special "Priority" tag which lowers the chance of any trouble with mishandling.

This service is complimentary for all EVA Air business class guests and Infinity MileageLands Diamond and Gold members. It is only available for a fee for everyone else.

Is it worth it? If you have a really tight connection or are in a hurry to get to a meeting after you arrive, yes. If you are flying for leisure, likely not, unless the thought of waiting at baggage claim sends you into convulsions.

International Travel Baggage Regulations:

Route-Specific Allowances:

Flying EVA Air internationally? Your baggage allowance is affected by where you're flying
If you're traveling to North America, you can also expect a typical baggage allowance of 2 checked bags (up to 23kg each) in Economy, Business and Premium Economy passengers have either higher weight allowances or extra checked bags in each class.
If you are traveling to either Europe or Australia, then the policies change slightly:

Customs and Safety Requirements:

--> Pack smart to avoid hassles at customs. Each country has some very idiosyncratic rules about the things it allows to cross its borders.
Most countries will restrict:
- Fresh foods and agricultural products.
- Medications that do not have prescriptions.
- Cash of more than $10,000 (or equivalent)
Do you remember liquid restrictions? Still the same- 100ml per container, in a clear resealable 1-liter bag.
Some countries require additional documentation for certain things. An example would be Japan, which has extremely strict requirements for bringing in medications that contain stimulants.

 Partner Airline Policies:

EVA Air plays nicely with Star Alliance partners, but these are smart routes on a mixed-carrier itinerary, and the baggage rules are likely not going to be the same.
Pretty much any travelers will follow the rule: the most restrictive policy applies. For example: if you're on a Evergreen flight to Los Angeles (LAX) and then connecting to United Airlines with smaller allowances, United's limits will be enforced on your EVA Air allowance.
Some of the popular partner airlines have different baggage policies:
• United Airlines embraces a piece concept on all their routes.
• All Nippon Airways (ANA) follows the weight concepts of EVA.
• Lufthansa has different allowances based on certain routes.
Refer to the specifics of your itinerary before packing. Typically, the airline operating the longest segment dictates your allowance.

Tips for Hassle-Free Baggage Experience:

Packing Recommendations:-

Traveling is stressful enough without additional baggage. Declutter but plan smart! Instead of folding your clothes, roll them. Not only will this save packing space and dresser space, but rolling clothes also helps save wrinkles. Start with the heavier items on the bottom of the suitcase and the lighter clothing on top.

If you don't want to lose track of your valuables, carry them in your carry-on. The same goes for medications, travel documents, your prescription information, and a change of clothes just in case your luggage goes missing.

If you have colorful luggage tags that you use for your bags - this is a godsend. Bright colored tags help your bags stand out when it's time to pick them off the luggage carousel and they will be easy to identify if they were lost in transit.

Lastly, but most importantly, remember EVA Air's weight restrictions:
• Economy: 23kg (50lbs) per bag
• Premium Economy/Business: 32kg (70lbs) per bag
You can avoid overweight charges, which start at $100, and climb fast! Weigh your bags before heading to the airport, so you don't have to scramble once you arrive.

Tracking Your Baggage:-
EVA Air's baggage tracking system is a game-changer. When you download the EVA Air mobile app, you receive real-time updates on the location of your luggage. You will even be notified when bags are loaded on the aircraft, and when the bags hit the baggage carousel.

Your baggage receipt has a special tracking number on it - take a photo just in case. If you want to be extra secure, you might consider putting an Air Tag or similar tracking device inside your luggage.

If your baggage is Lost:-
Bags do not show? Don't freak out. Please head straight to the EVA Air Baggage Service counter, and before leaving the airport, make sure to fill out a Property Irregularity Report (PIR) with information about what is missing.

Make sure that you have all your flight documents on hand (boarding pass, baggage claim tags, and ID). EVA Air usually finds missing bags in 24-48 hrs.

In order for your to receive compensation you'll need to file a claim within 7 days for damaged bags, and 21 days for lost bags. Make sure to document everything (pictures). Save all receipts if you had to go out and purchase items for your emergency needs, too.

Early Check-in Benefits:-
The early bird doesn't just catch the worm; they also get better baggage handling. When you check in early (well ahead of your international departures -- 3+ hours is best), those bags will be loaded first and often come out first as well.

To start bag handling, use EVA Air's online check-in (which opens 48 hours before departure) to select a seat and print your baggage tags at home. Some airports even have a dedicated pre-tag counter just for you.

Also, checking in early gives you plenty of opportunity to sort out your weight issues or transfer items between your bags without trepidation. Additionally, checking in early gives you first dibs on bin space for your carry-ons.

Conclusion :

Knowing and understanding the EVA Air baggage policy ahead of your trip, can coordinate to you saving time, money, and stress at the airport. With a great carry-on allowance, full information on checked baggage, and coverage for specific items like sports gear & musical instruments in conjunction with policies to cover excess baggage fees and lost luggage, EVA Air is committed to making your travel experience the best it can be.
