Ever find yourself standing in front of a check-in counter and desperately rummaging through your suitcase while the wait behind you is getting longer? Yep, this is the baggage policy confusion for Turkish Airlines in action, and it happens to the best of us.
No one wants to start a trip by paying unexpected fees or feeling heartbreak by leaving something behind. That's why knowing Turkish Airlines baggage policy is so important to do before you begin packing to ensure you avoid unwanted expenses at the airport and experiences that make you not enjoy your travels.
I have decoded the ultimate guide to the Turkish Airlines baggage allowance below, including the hidden exceptions no one tells you about and the limits that apply to carry-on luggage as well as the checked bag weight allowance by the class of ticket you have purchased.
The biggest twist? There is one class of ticket that is so much better for baggage-heavy travelers than others, but it's not what you think...
Traveling with Turkish Airlines? The thing you need to know is what you can take on board with you!
Turkish Airlines allows the following carry-on luggage:
Bag weight: a maximum of 8 kg (17.6 lbs)
Bag size: maximum dimensions of 55 x 40 x 23 cm (21.6 x 15.75 x 9 inches)
Any dimensions outlined above will be strictly monitored at security and at the boarding gate. If your bag weighs too much or is larger than the maximum size, you will have to check it (and you may incur additional fees!)
Insider tip: Measure your bag before leaving for the airport. The overhead bin spaces can be brutal. There is nothing worse than trying to fit your bag into the overhead bin while everyone waits impatiently for you from the aisle.
Your ticket class determines how much you are allowed to carry:
|
Ticket Class |
Permits |
|---|---|
|
Economy |
1 carry-on bag (8 kg) + 1 personal item |
|
Business |
2 carry-on bags (8 kg each) + 1 personal item |
|
First Class |
2 carry-on bags (8 kg each) + 1 personal item |
Personal items mean handbags, laptop bags, or small backpacks that fit under your own seat.
Turkish Airlines allows special items in addition to metal luggage:
Does this mean that you may take medicine? Yes! You can take medicine as long as you have proper documentation. What about taking breast milk or baby food? Yes! You may take breast milk or baby food even if you are not traveling with the baby.
Just a reminder, the liquids must still adhere to the 3-1-1 rule: liquids in containers of 100 ml (3.4 oz) or less and in a clear, leak-proof, quart-size bag.
Turkish Airlines does not do baggage with a simple blanket policy, but it does have a clear structure based on your ticket type.
Economy Class passenger:
20 kg for domestic flights.
30 kg for the majority of international flights.
Business Class passenger:
30 kg for domestic routes.
40 kg for international routes.
Miles & Smiles members? Good news. Elite and Elite Plus status members even get extra baggage regardless of ticket type.
Elite: +10 kg extra allowance.
Elite Plus: +20 kg extra allowance.
If your checked bag is heavier than 32 kg (70 lbs), it will be refused at check-in, and you will have to retrieve it and resolve it. This is not about whether Turkish Airlines is being unreasonable, particularly as it's about baggage handler safety—the safety of baggage handlers around the world.
Trying to check in a bag heavier than 32 kg? You will need to split it into separate bags or pay exorbitant overweight fees.
Wrappingly, using up your allowance will add up fast. Turkish Airlines excess baggage fees depend on

Smart travelers buy excess baggage online prior to their flights—it was about 20% cheaper than airport prices.
There are serious size limits with Turkish Airlines baggage. Each piece of checked baggage must be within:
Turkish Airlines operates under two different systems, depending on which part of the world you are going to:
Weight Concept:
Typical on flights from/to Asia, Africa, and the Middle East. In this case, the weight of your total baggage matters, not the number of bags you have.
Piece Concept:
Mainly used on flights directly to/from North America. In this case there are a certain number of bags allowed (usually 2 for international), with its own weight limit for each bag.
Willing to travel with your favorite equipment? Turkish Airlines gives you the ability to do so! If you are a golfer, you can check your golf bag containing your clubs, balls, and shoes as a part of your checked baggage limit at no additional fee (this counts against your checked baggage allowance above).
Skiers will not be left out—one set of ski equipment counts as one checked bag. You just have to ensure it is packed appropriately in a ski bag.
Cyclists, you will also be happy!! Your bike must be partially disassembled: handlebars folded sideways and pedals taken off. You will need to package everything in a hard case or a strong box.
Surfboards and fishing equipment can travel with your checked luggage too. You just need to ensure it is securely packaged.

Flying to Istanbul with a musical instrument? Most smaller instruments (flutes, violins, etc.) are allowed as long as they can be a carry-on under the seat in front of you or easily placed in an overhead compartment.
Traveling with a larger instrument is a bit more complicated; all large instruments require a seat (yes, a seat!) that you can reserve by calling Turkish Airlines and reserving a "human seat" along with the ticket for the cello.
Any large instruments you'll need to check, make sure they fit well in a hard case, are fully padded, and are insured.
Turkish Airlines allows all assistance-related items to be uncomplicated on airfare. Equipment is easy if you are using assistive devices like wheelchairs, crutches, and portable oxygen concentrators—these items fly free and are not considered baggage.
If you need that equipment during the flight, make sure to notify the airline 48 hours ahead so they can prepare.
Crystal vases and heirloom items generally need extra care. Turkish Airlines suggests, if possible, using the original packaging.
If the original box is not available, be sure to use strong boxes, and when packing them, use suitable padding/cushioning. Use a clear "FRAGILE" label on all sides of the box as well as the top and bottom of the box so that everyone understands nothing to do with the shipment is robust.
If you are shipping valuables that are especially fragile, it may be worth looking into purchasing additional insurance since the limitation of liability by Turkish Airlines for fragile cargo is minimal.
Have you ever experienced that sinking feeling when your luggage is missing and nowhere to be found at your baggage carousel? It happens to the best of us, but Turkish Airlines luckily has a relatively straightforward process to help you track down your lost baggage.
Before doing anything else, just breathe! Go to the Turkish Airlines lost baggage counter at the airport. The agent will need your baggage claim tag and boarding pass to complete a Property Irregularity Report (PIR). This will give you your PIR number (your tracking number), which is essential to hang on to.
You are able to report a missing baggage claim as far out as 7 days through the Turkish Airlines website or customer service by telephone. They will require your ticket number, flight details, and baggage tag number.
After you submit the missing baggage report, Turkish Airlines usually can track your luggage within 4-5 days of your report. Once Turkish Airlines locates the luggage, they will arrange for it to be delivered to the address you provided.
No one ever wants to start their trip shopping for underwear and toothpaste. Turkish Airlines knows this.
If your bags are delayed, you are entitled to reimbursement for necessities. Please save any receipts from toiletries, clothing, and any other necessities you were forced to buy. Turkish Airlines reimburses us as much as $50 per day for international flights, with some limits depending on your ticket class.
After 21 days, your baggage is considered lost. You may be eligible for further compensation, up to approximately $1,550, depending on weight and contents.
And keep in mind that submitting your claim quickly (within 21 days is generally considered acceptable to receive compensation) is very important.
Turkish Airlines is finally on board with 21st century baggage tracking.
The mobile app allows you to track your checked bag in real-time. Just enter either your name and baggage tag reference number or your name and PIR, and you will get updates as your bag moves through the system.
You can also track through their website with the same information. For tech-savvy travelers, Turkish Airlines has chosen to do SMS notifications about your baggage status assuming you opted in booking or check-in.
Another cool feature in the app is the ability to take a picture of your luggage, to help identify it just in case it disappears. Smart move for frequent flyers.
If you are an international flyer with Turkish Airlines remember that baggage rules are not uniform. Different countries have different views on what you can take in.
For example, Japan restricts liquids to 100ml containers; Dubai prohibits codeine based medications (even with a prescription); Australia will check every food item and may take away that innocent apple in your bag.
Here are a few to watch for:
• India restricts satellite phones and drones
• China restricts quantities of prescription medications
• Brazil requires declaring electronics in excess of $500
Consequently, always check specific baggage rules for the country you are travelling to before you pack. Check for "[country name] import restrictions" and you will eliminate a lot of grief at customs.
Have a layover? The baggage situation is different.
If you're just connecting in Istanbul on Turkish Airlines, when it makes sense, you'll be checked through to your final destination with your bags. If your layover is more than 24 hours or you are switching to a non-partner airline, you'll have to claim your bag and re-check your bags.
Generally, if your layover is shorter than 6 hours your bags are auto-moving. If longer things can go either way, but you'll more than used to meet some special considerations:
While Turkish Airlines cooperates well with the other Star Alliance airlines, the regulations are not equal across all airlines.
When segments are connecting to United, Lufthansa or other Star Alliance carriers, your checked baggage allowance will be the most generous of all impression for your longest flight segment. But for carry-on baggage, it will follow the operating airline.
Certain partners like Air Canada have stricter weight limits (23kg vs Turkish 30kg bags for many routes). and with superior partners like ANA, they may have different dimensions for checked bags.
As a general rule of thumb, always check the allowances when you book mixed-airline itineraries. Just because you started with Turkish, doesn't mean the same rule applies all the way through.
The customs dance is probably the most difficult part of international travel.
Remember, duty-free doesn't necessarily mean tax-free. That bottle of Turkish raki might be tax-free when you leave Istanbul, but if it exceeds the alcohol limits of your destination country, it might be subject to import duties.
Turkish Airlines provides full service baggage solutions designed to meet individual travel needs. With decent carryon allowances that keep needs within reach and flexible checked bag policies that allow a traveler to check bags to match their destination and fare class, Turkish Airlines is trying to create some, depth of manageable convenience, and depth to bag limits for each of their passengers. The specialized services to handle fragile baggage, sports gear, and musical instruments can also add to the travelers sense of stress.
When it comes to travelling with little stress, be sure you familiarize yourself with the effective tracking systems as well as some delivery services that Turkish Airlines can provide to you, and it's worth checking some of the international travel regulations as well to see if an international flight changes regulations when arriving at the destination. Checking all of these details in advance of travelling will pay dividends by helping you avoid unexpected baggage education fees with Turkish Airlines and help make your trip easier, more enjoyable travel experience.
